## Five Questions Decide Whether a Tracker's Number Means Anything

You evaluate an AI visibility tracking tool by asking five questions. How many times does it ask each assistant before it reports a number? Which assistants does it check on the plan you'd actually buy? How much history does it keep, and can you take it with you? When you're not named, does it show who was named instead and which page the answer read? And can it connect a named answer to a visit or a lead? A tool that answers every one of them clearly is measuring something. A tool that dodges two of them is guessing with a dashboard.

The reason these five matter is that an AI answer isn't a ranking. Google shows roughly the same ten links to everyone who types the same words. An assistant writes a fresh answer each time, and two people asking ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI the same question on the same morning can get different names back. So the accuracy of a visibility number comes from the method behind it, not from the chart it's shown on. This guide works through each question with the 2026 research that justifies it, then ends with a scorecard you can fill in during any vendor's trial. It applies whether you're a single-location business, a brand, or an agency choosing a tool for twenty clients.

## Data Accuracy Starts With How Many Times the Tool Asks

Data accuracy in AI visibility tracking is a sampling problem before it's anything else. AirOps' 2026 State of AI Search report, quoted on its [answer variance explainer](https://www.airops.com/glossary/answer-variance), found that only 30% of brands stay visible from one AI answer to the next, and just 20% remain visible across five consecutive runs. A tool that asks once and reports you as named has measured one coin flip. The same page recommends at least five runs per prompt to start and twenty or more on the questions that matter most.

ThriveStack's August 2026 [analysis of non-determinism in AI visibility tracking](https://www.thrivestack.ai/research/ai-visibility-tracking-non-determinism) gathers the field's working numbers. A University of St. Gallen research team the page cites put the floor at seven runs per prompt per engine before a per-brand rate is usable, ThriveStack's own operating rule runs that daily and aggregates it over a two to four week rolling window, and a broad consumer category can need 60 to 100 runs over four to eight weeks before its rate settles. Treat seven a day as what a research-grade study does, not as a shopping requirement. No tracker samples that densely at a price a local business would pay, and the practical bar is a stated run count per question, daily on the questions that matter most, aggregated over weeks rather than read off one check.

So the first question for any vendor is plain. For each tracked question on each assistant, how many answers do you capture per week, and is your mention rate a share of those captures or the result of one check? Ask for the number, not the adjective. Lighthouse Local was built around this question. Every tracked question gets a weekly sweep across every engine we track, the questions you flag as priority get checked every day, and a typical account adds up to 1,400 or more live answer checks a month, so the rate you see is a share of real captures rather than one check dressed up as a trend. Put your highest-stakes questions in the daily slots, three on Starter and twelve on Growth, and they clear the seven-run floor inside two weeks. The weekly questions build their trend over about two months, and [our AI visibility tracker](https://www.lighthouselocal.ai/how-it-works) tags every one of those captured answers mentioned, not mentioned, or competitor won, so a rate is never a number you have to take on faith.

## A Platform List Is a Plan Tier, Not a Feature

Which assistants a tool checks is the second question, and the honest answer is almost always tied to a price. Writesonic's own [plan documentation](https://docs.writesonic.com/docs/different-subscription-plans-of-writesonic) shows its self-serve Basic and Growth plans tracking three platforms, ChatGPT with Gemini and Google's AI Overviews, while in that document Claude and Copilot appear on the Enterprise tier only. Several vendors follow the same pattern, a short engine list on the trial and the full list on an enterprise tier. SE Ranking's [AI visibility tracker](https://seranking.com/ai-visibility-tracker.html) lists five surfaces, Perplexity, AI Overviews, ChatGPT, AI Mode, and Gemini, with Claude absent. The logo row on a homepage and the engines on your invoice are different lists.

Why this matters more than it sounds is that each assistant draws from a different pool of sources. Writesonic's July 2026 [study of 161,286 prompts](https://writesonic.com/blog/ai-citation-source-overlap-study) measured how much the domains cited by one engine overlap with another and found pairwise overlap between 0.12 and 0.24 on a scale where 1.0 would be identical. ChatGPT against Gemini overlapped at just 0.119, about 12 percent. Against classic search, Ahrefs found in 2025 that ChatGPT's [cited URLs overlap Google's top ten](https://ahrefs.com/blog/chatgpt-google-citations) by only 10.00% across about 3,300 queries. A tracker that covers two assistants isn't a fraction of one picture. It's two separate pictures, with the rest missing.

![Cited sources barely overlap between engines, 12 to 24 percent of domains across pairs and 10 percent of URLs for ChatGPT against Google top ten](https://www.lighthouselocal.ai/images/blog/blog-how-to-evaluate-ai-visibility-tracking-tools-overlap.webp)

So ask which engines are checked on the plan you'd buy, not the plan on the demo, and whether the local and regional variants of a question, the ones with a city in them, run on every engine or only some. Our [side-by-side tool comparisons](https://www.lighthouselocal.ai/compare) record exactly this per vendor, engine by engine, with the plan each sits on and the date we checked. Every Lighthouse Local plan, including the 14-day free trial, checks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI on every question, including the ones with a city in them, with nothing held back for an enterprise tier. We don't cover Copilot, DeepSeek, or Grok, and the comparison pages say so, because a buyer's guide that hides its author's gaps isn't one you should trust on anyone else's.

## Ask for the History in Days, Then Ask What Happens When You Leave

How much history a tool keeps decides whether you can ever see a trend, and few vendors publish it. Researching this post, we read pricing and documentation pages of eight tracking vendors in October 2026, Peec, Profound, Writesonic, AthenaHQ, Rankshift, Semrush, SE Ranking, and Trendos, and found a plan-level retention figure on none of them. Trial pages promise historical data from day one without saying how far back it stays readable. The only retention-adjacent figure we found was Amplitude's [AI visibility FAQ](https://amplitude.com/docs/api/content/amplitude-ai/ai-visibility/faq), which states a 30-day data-retrieval period after a contract ends. For our own plans the number is on the plan card, 30 days of history on Starter and 90 days on Growth and the agency plans.

That silence is the finding. Given that a broad category can need four to eight weeks of runs before its rate settles, 30 days of captures is enough to confirm a change landed and too short to prove it stuck, so a 30-day window suits a first test and a 90-day window is what a monthly report needs. Ask three things in writing. How many days of captured answers does my plan retain, can I export the raw answers and not only the chart, and what happens to the history if I downgrade or cancel. A vendor who answers all three in days and file formats is one you can build a monthly report on. One who answers in adjectives is one you'll be re-collecting data from in six months.

The export question has a second use. If you ever switch tools, the only way to keep your trend line is to carry the captured answers with you, so ask for the format before you need it. Lighthouse Local gives every captured answer one of three tags, mentioned, not mentioned, or competitor won. Your plan's history window, stated in days on the plan card, is how far back you can read them. On Growth and the agency plans that window is 90 days, long enough to put a before and after on one page for an owner or a client, and the number is printed on the plan card in days, which is more than any of those eight vendor pages gave us.

## Gap Identification Means Showing Who Got Named Instead

Identifying a visibility gap means more than reporting that you weren't named. A useful tracker shows three things for every answer that skipped you. Which competitor was named in your place, which pages the assistant read before it answered, and whether any of those pages were yours. Those three columns turn an absence into a to-do list, and a tool that shows only your own named rate leaves you guessing at the cause.

The reason the source column matters is that the two failures look identical in a mention rate and need opposite fixes. If the assistant read nothing from your site, the problem is reach, meaning the page isn't indexed, isn't crawlable, or doesn't exist for that question. If it read your page and still named someone else, the problem is what the page says. The pattern behind [why a rival gets named ahead of you](https://www.lighthouselocal.ai/blog/why-ai-names-your-competitor-and-not-you) only shows up in this kind of source-level view, and it's the view to demand from any vendor. Ask to see one answer where you were skipped, with the competitor named and the sources listed. If the demo can't produce that, the tool is scoring you, not diagnosing you.

This is the view Lighthouse Local shows on every answer. Each captured answer is tagged mentioned, not mentioned, or competitor won, you see which of your pages the assistant cited and which it skipped, and the gaps roll up into a ranked fix list with the most impactful item first, so the diagnosis and the to-do list arrive together. If you'd rather not work that list yourself, our specialists can make the fixes for you.

Local businesses have one more gap test. The same question asked with two different towns in it should be tracked as two questions, because the assistants answer them differently and name different businesses. A tool that only tracks brand-level prompts without a city attached can't find a gap in the neighborhood you actually serve.

## ROI Is Measured in Referrals You Can See and Named Answers You Can't

Return on AI visibility is hard to measure because most of it never shows up as a click. SE Ranking's June 2026 [study of 101,574 websites](https://seranking.com/blog/ai-traffic-research-study/) over sixteen months found AI platforms sending 0.32% of all website traffic in 2026, up from 0.24% in 2025, with ChatGPT responsible for 74.78% of those AI referrals. That's a small, fast-growing slice, and it's the only slice an analytics tool can see. The customer who asks an assistant for a plumber, gets your name, and calls you never clicks anything your analytics can attribute.

Even the clickable slice is undercounted. Search Engine Journal's July 2026 [guide to GA4's AI Assistant channel](https://searchenginejournal.com/ga4s-ai-assistant-channel-undercounts-your-ai-traffic-how-to-build-one-that-doesnt/580133) found the default channel misses Perplexity, which keeps landing in Referral, counts AI Overviews and AI Mode visits as Organic Search, and sends referrer-less app traffic to Direct. A Branch survey of 300 enterprise leaders in January 2026, published in [its AI search findings](https://branch.io/resources/blog/ai-search-in-2026-key-findings-from-300-enterprise-leaders), put a number on the frustration. 26% said they can't track the user journey from AI discovery to conversion, and 24% said their analytics tools can't handle AI attribution. The same survey found 80% calling AI attribution clearer than traditional SEO, which says the confidence is there and the plumbing isn't.

So judge ROI with two measures, not one. The first is the named rate itself, tracked over time, because a rising share of answers that name you is the leading indicator and the only one that moves when a customer gets your name and calls without clicking. The second is a referral view that's been corrected for the GA4 gaps above. Our walkthrough of [building an AI search visibility dashboard](https://www.lighthouselocal.ai/blog/how-to-set-up-an-ai-search-visibility-dashboard) puts both on one page beside Search Console and Bing. Ask any vendor which of the two it reports, and be suspicious of a tool that promises revenue attribution from AI answers alone. Nobody has the data to deliver that honestly yet.

That's also why Lighthouse Local reports the named rate by assistant with the tagged answers behind it, and why we'll tell you plainly that the referral number in your analytics is the floor of what AI is sending you, not the ceiling.

## Prompt Volume Numbers Are Estimates, So Use Them to Sort, Not to Decide

Several tools now show a search-volume-style number beside each prompt, and it's worth knowing where it comes from. Ahrefs, in its August 2026 explanation of [how it estimates AI search demand](https://ahrefs.com/blog/how-ahrefs-estimates-ai-search-demand/), states that no major AI platform other than Copilot shares query data, and that some vendors' prompt volumes can be significantly over-estimated. Conductor's July 2026 [piece on prompt volume](https://www.conductor.com/academy/debunking-ai-prompt-volume/) explains the mechanism. The figures come from paid panels and browser extensions, and tens of millions of sampled prompts is well under 1% of the estimated 2.5 billion daily inputs. Both publishers sell tracking tools themselves, which makes their candor more useful, not less.

The practical rule is to let a volume estimate order your list and never let it decide whether a question belongs on it. A local business should track the questions its own customers ask, with the town in them, even when a volume tool shows zero, because those panels barely sample local queries at all. When a vendor leads a demo with prompt volumes, ask how the number was built. The answer tells you how much of the rest of the dashboard was built the same way.

## A Scorecard You Can Fill In on a Trial

Here are the questions as a scorecard. Run it during a free trial, with your own questions loaded, and write the vendor's answers in the right-hand column before you compare prices.

| Criterion | Ask the vendor | A pass looks like | A red flag |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Data accuracy | How many answers per question per assistant per week? | A stated count per question per assistant, daily on priority questions, with the rate shown as a share of captures and aggregated over weeks. | One check per question with a mention rate presented as a trend. |
| Platform coverage | Which engines run on the plan I'd buy, and on city-level questions? | The five we track or more, on every question, at that price. | An engine such as Claude sold as an add-on, or a homepage logo row the invoice doesn't match. |
| History | How many days are retained, can I export raw answers, what happens on cancel? | Answers in days and file formats, with at least 90 days for a monthly report. | Unlimited history that turns out to mean a score with no answers behind it. |
| Gap detection | Show me one skipped answer with the competitor named and the sources listed. | Competitor, cited pages, and whether any were mine, on every answer. | A single named-rate chart with no source view. |
| ROI | Which of named-rate trend and corrected referral traffic do you report? | Both, with GA4's AI channel gaps acknowledged. | Revenue attribution promised from AI answers alone. |

![Lighthouse Local scored on its own five questions, three outright passes, history passing on Growth, and ROI passing on the named rate](https://www.lighthouselocal.ai/images/blog/blog-how-to-evaluate-ai-visibility-tracking-tools-scorecard.webp)

Two rounds of tools are worth running through it. Our roundup of [AI visibility tools for agencies](https://www.lighthouselocal.ai/blog/ai-visibility-tools-for-agencies) covers the white-label and multi-client side, and the list of [AI visibility tools for local businesses](https://www.lighthouselocal.ai/blog/ai-search-visibility-tools-for-small-businesses) covers the single-location end. Price belongs after the scorecard, not before it, and for agencies the way a tool bills, per client or from a shared pool, decides what the twenty-fifth client costs more than the sticker price does.

Run that scorecard against Lighthouse Local and here's what you get. Sampling, pass, with daily checks on the questions you flag and a weekly sweep across the rest. Coverage, pass, every engine we track on every plan from the first day of the trial, questions with a city in them included. History, pass on Growth and the agency plans at 90 days, with Starter's 30 suited to a first test rather than a monthly report. Gap detection, pass, with every skipped answer showing who won it and which of your pages were cited or skipped. ROI, pass on the half anyone can measure, a named-rate trend with the answers behind it and no attribution promise, because nobody can make one honestly. Setup takes about ten minutes and the first results arrive the next day, and agencies get the same five answers for each client on [Lighthouse Local for Agencies](https://www.lighthouselocal.ai/for-agencies), white-label on every tier. Whatever tool you choose, make the vendor answer these questions in numbers first. We've answered ours above, and the chart means nothing until a vendor does.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the most important feature in an AI visibility tracking tool?

Sampling. Because an assistant writes a fresh answer each time, a tool that checks a question once reports one coin flip. AirOps' 2026 report found only 30% of brands stay visible from one answer to the next and 20% across five runs, so the first thing to check is how many answers per question per assistant the tool captures each week and whether its mention rate is a share of those captures.

### How many AI platforms should a visibility tracker cover?

At least the assistants your customers use, checked on the plan you'd actually buy. Cited sources barely overlap between engines, with a 2026 study measuring ChatGPT against Gemini at 0.119 on a scale where 1.0 is identical, so each uncovered engine is a separate blind spot rather than a fraction of one. Many vendors reserve engines such as Claude for an enterprise tier or an add-on, so confirm the engine list on your invoice, not the homepage.

### How much historical data does an AI visibility tool need?

Enough to show a before and after around a fix, which means at least two to three months of captured answers, since a broad category can need four to eight weeks of runs before its rate settles. Most vendors don't publish a retention figure, so ask for the number in days, confirm you can export the raw captured answers, and confirm what happens to the history if you downgrade or cancel.

### Can AI visibility tools measure ROI?

Partly. AI referrals were 0.32% of all website traffic in 2026 by SE Ranking's measure, and GA4's default AI channel misses Perplexity and misfiles AI Overviews as organic search, so the click side is small and undercounted. The customer who gets your name from an assistant and calls you never shows up in analytics at all. Judge ROI by the named-rate trend over time plus a corrected referral view, and treat any promise of revenue attribution from AI answers alone as a red flag.

### Are prompt volume numbers in AI visibility tools accurate?

They're estimates. Ahrefs states that no major AI platform except Copilot shares query data, and Conductor notes the figures come from paid panels and browser extensions sampling well under 1% of daily prompts. Use a volume estimate to order your question list, never to decide whether a question belongs on it, and track your customers' local questions even when the estimate reads zero.

### Does Lighthouse Local pass its own evaluation?

It passes coverage, sampling, and gap detection outright. Every plan checks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI on every question, priority questions are checked daily with a weekly sweep across the rest, and every captured answer gets one of three tags, mentioned, not mentioned, or competitor won, along with the pages it cited. History passes on Growth and the agency plans at 90 days, with 30 on Starter for a first test. ROI passes on the half anyone can measure, a named-rate trend reported without any revenue attribution promise.
