## Reselling an Audit Means Selling the Readout, Not the Scan

To resell an AI visibility audit, run a white-label scan of the client's website under your agency's brand, then charge for the part software can't do, which is reading the findings against that client's business and turning them into a scoped, priced plan. The scan itself adds little cost per client. The readout is the product, and it's what the fee pays for.

Clients are already asking about it. SEOFOMO's 2026 survey of 171 search professionals found that [98% had been asked about AI search visibility](https://hub.seofomo.co/surveys/state-ai-search-optimization/) by a client, manager, or decision maker, up from 91% a year earlier. The owners on the other side of that question mostly haven't started. In an April 2026 survey of 1,041 small businesses, Squarespace found [over two-thirds hadn't yet looked](https://www.squarespace.com/blog/ai-search-for-business-owners) at how their business shows up in AI answers, and nearly six in ten agreed they don't know where to start.

That's the opening. A client who's curious and has no first step will pay for a first step, as long as it arrives with their own website's name on it and a short list of what to do next. If you've only used the scan as [a white-label AI audit that captures leads](https://www.lighthouselocal.ai/blog/what-is-a-white-label-ai-audit) from new prospects, this is the other use for the same tool, sold to the clients you already have.

## A Marketing Firm's Own Site Scored 70 Out of 100

Here's what the client is buying, shown on a real scan from our own data with the name left out. The business is a digital marketing firm in the U.S., a company that sells search work for a living. At the end of September 2026, its site scored 70 out of 100, a grade of C. That wasn't an off day. Twelve scans between late August and the end of September all landed between 69 and 71.

The single number hides the story. The same report breaks into six category scores. Technical came back at 91, SEO at 90, and Content at 85. AI Visibility, the category that checks for schema markup describing the business, its services, and its ratings, came back at 63. Trust and Authority scored 53, and Performance scored 35.

![Six audit category scores for one site as bars, with Technical at 91 and SEO at 90 on top and Performance at 35 at the bottom](https://www.lighthouselocal.ai/images/blog/blog-how-to-resell-ai-visibility-audits-scores.webp)

Read that spread the way a client would. A flat 70 gets a shrug. Six numbers show a site that does the classic search work well and gives up ground in three places most owners never check, which are how fast the page becomes usable, whether its facts are labeled for a machine, and whether its proof of trust is written anywhere a crawler can read it. Under the scores sat 16 specific on-site findings, each ranked by impact. That list is what you're selling. If a firm whose trade is search carries 16 open findings, it's a fair bet that a client's site, built once and left alone, has a list worth an hour of your attention.

## How Much Should an Agency Charge for an AI Visibility Audit?

Price it from two directions, a floor set by your own cost and a ceiling set by what the market already pays. For the ceiling, Red Engage's June 2026 review of what 20 GEO agencies charge put [a one-time audit at $1,500 to $5,000](https://red-engage.com/blog/geo-agency-pricing). Treat that as the top of the range, because it's an agency's own guide and most of the work it describes is for mid-market B2B companies, not a dentist or a roofer.

For the floor, start with the markup agencies already apply to resold work. Nico Digital's 2026 benchmark, built from public rate cards and its own partner data, found agencies resell white-label SEO at [two to three times the wholesale rate](https://www.nicodigital.com/partners/research/white-label-seo-pricing-benchmark-2026/) and keep gross margins of 45% to 65%. Those figures describe monthly SEO work, not one-time audits, so treat them as a sanity check on your markup and not as a rule. Now run your own numbers. Say the readout takes five hours of a strategist's time, covering the scan, the review, the scope, and the client call, at a loaded cost of $80 an hour. That's $400 of labor, and the scan adds little per client on top of what you already pay for the tool. At twice your cost the audit sells for $800, and at three times it sells for $1,200. Swap in your own hours and rate, and you've got a price you can defend line by line.

That margin matters more than it looks. Promethean Research surveyed 119 agency owners and managers in February 2026 and found [an average after-tax net margin of 13%](https://prometheanresearch.com/2026-state-of-digital-services-digital-agency-industry-research/) for 2025. A net figure and a gross figure aren't the same measure, so don't set them side by side. The useful reading is simpler. A fixed-scope product that takes five hours and repeats across every client is a way to add revenue without adding headcount.

How you package it decides who says yes.

| Model | What the client pays | Fits | Watch for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Free scan, paid fixes | Nothing for the report | New prospects and cold outreach | A free report gets treated as worth what it cost |
| Paid readout | One fixed fee | Existing clients and referrals | You owe a real hour of judgment, not a forwarded PDF |
| Fee credited to the first fix | One fixed fee, applied to the work if they go ahead | Clients weighing a longer engagement | Put an expiry date on the credit |

For clients you already serve, the paid readout is the default. They know your work, so the fee buys your judgment on a new question, and it's the first step toward [selling AI visibility as a monthly service](https://www.lighthouselocal.ai/blog/ai-visibility-the-new-service-for-agencies).

## Sixteen Findings Become a Three-Line Scope

No client buys 16 things. They buy three. The work of the readout is grouping the findings into scope lines that each have one owner, one price, and one finish date. Here's how the marketing firm's list sorts.

1. **Label the business facts, six findings.** No AggregateRating markup, no Service markup for each service, no star rating on the homepage, no founding year, no phone and address in structured data, and no FAQPage markup. That's about a day of work for anyone who's written [AggregateRating schema](https://www.lighthouselocal.ai/blog/aggregate-rating-schema) before.
2. **Make the page usable sooner, four findings.** Too much main-thread work blocking the page, a Largest Contentful Paint over 2.5 seconds, a First Contentful Paint over 1.8 seconds, and a slow Speed Index. This group explains the Performance score of 35, and it holds the two highest-impact findings on the on-site list.
3. **Housekeeping, six findings.** A missing canonical tag, a canonical that doesn't match the served URL, an llms.txt file that's off the standard format, missing image alt text, placeholder links, and a title too long for a search result. An afternoon.

![Sixteen audit findings sorted into three scope lines, six for structured data, four for page speed, and six for housekeeping](https://www.lighthouselocal.ai/images/blog/blog-how-to-resell-ai-visibility-audits-scope.webp)

Quote the three lines separately. A client who can't approve everything can still approve one, and one approved line is a project, a result, and a reason for the next conversation. Order them by what the client will feel first, not by what's easiest for you. Agencies on our plans can also add done-for-you services under their own brand, such as on-page SEO and local citations, with the work handled by Lighthouse Local's specialists while the agency keeps the margin.

## Promise the Fix, Not the Mention

The fastest way to lose a client is to sell an audit as a promise that an assistant will name them. No one can promise that, and the evidence behind each finding isn't equal, so say which is which.

Crawler access is the most concrete line on a report. In July 2026, Cloro compared 1,058 domains and found that sites blocking OpenAI's crawler held [a median of 0.003 ChatGPT citations](https://cloro.dev/research/ai-crawler-blocks/) for each Google ranking, against 0.417 for sites that let it in. That's a correlation and not a controlled test, but if a scan finds a robots.txt file shutting AI crawlers out, it's the first fix to raise.

Structured data needs a more careful pitch. In 2026, Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that AI was already citing as they added schema, against 4,000 matched control pages, and reported that [schema had no clear positive or negative effect](https://ahrefs.com/blog/schema-ai-citations/) on how often AI cited them. Pages with no citations yet weren't part of the test, so the result doesn't rule schema out for a local site starting from zero. Either way, sell the first scope line for what it does. It states the client's services, rating, address, and founding year in a form a machine doesn't have to guess at, which is about getting the facts right wherever they're read. It isn't a switch that makes an assistant cite the page next month.

The same honesty applies to the score itself. An audit reads the client's website, and the answers the assistants give are a separate measurement. The marketing firm above scored 90 on SEO and 91 on Technical, and across the six questions it tracks with us, just one AI assistant out of the five we track names it. A strong site and a thin answer rate can sit side by side, and a client who hears that from you first will trust the next thing you tell them.

## The Email That Sells the Audit to a Client You Already Have

Existing clients don't need a landing page. They need one email that shows you've already looked. Run their site through the scan first, then send this.

```
Subject: What AI can and can't read on yourclient.com
Hi [Name],
We ran yourclient.com through our AI visibility audit this week. It scored [score] out of 100, with [number] specific findings. The two that stand out are [finding one] and [finding two].
These matter because more of your customers now ask an AI assistant who to hire, and those assistants build their answers partly from what they can read on your website.
I'd like to walk you through the full report on a 45-minute call. You'll leave with every finding ranked, a fixed quote for each group of fixes, and our view on which to do first. The audit and the call are [your price].
Does [day] work?
[Your name]
```

Three things make it work. It opens with their number, not with a trend. It names two findings, enough to prove the scan is real and few enough that the call still has something to say. And it states the price in the email, so the client who replies has already accepted it.

Timing matters as much as wording. A 2026 Moxo report on mid-market and enterprise B2B companies found that [43% of client churn](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/moxos-2026-b2b-retention-report-finds-43-of-client-churn-occurs-in-the-first-90-days-302679540.html) occurs within the first 90 days. Local clients are a different population, but the early window is worth planning for. A scored report and a visible fix in month one give a new client something to point to, so put the audit in your onboarding, not only in your upsell calendar.

## What the Client Is Holding When the Call Ends

A paid audit has to leave something behind that the client can forward to a partner or a board. Five pieces cover it.

- **The branded report.** The overall score and the six category scores, under your name. Lighthouse Local's [Beacon](https://www.lighthouselocal.ai/beacon) puts your logo, colors, and domain on the audit, the results, and the emails, so your agency is what the client sees.
- **The ranked findings.** Every finding in impact order, each with a short explanation of what it is.
- **The three-line scope.** Each group of fixes with a fixed price, an owner, and a date.
- **The honest caveats.** One paragraph on what the fixes can and can't be expected to change.
- **The baseline date.** The day of the scan, written down, so a second scan after the fixes has something to be measured against.

The report belongs to the client once they've paid for it. Say so on the call. An owner who knows they can take the findings anywhere is more likely to hand the fixes to the agency that explained them.

## Three Objections, and the Answer to Each

**"We already pay you for SEO."** Show them the six scores. The marketing firm scored 90 on SEO and 63 on AI Visibility on the same day, on the same site. The audit reads things a rankings report doesn't, and the gap between those two numbers is the whole argument.

**"There's no budget for another service."** That's usually true. UPrinting surveyed 1,000 people who own or work in small businesses and found [57.6% had flat or lower marketing budgets](https://www.uprinting.com/blog/the-scrappy-marketing-playbook-1000-small-business-owners-on-whats-working-and-what-isnt/) in 2026. A one-time fee with a fixed scope is a far easier yes than a new monthly line, which is one more reason to sell the audit before you sell anything ongoing.

**"Can't I run a free one myself?"** Yes, and tell them so. Any owner can [run a free Lighthouse Local audit](https://audits.lighthouselocal.ai/?utm_source=lighthouselocal&utm_medium=marketing-site&utm_campaign=blog-how-to-resell-ai-visibility-audits&utm_content=post-body) and get a score and a fix list in about a minute. What a form can't give them is someone who knows their business deciding which six of the 16 findings matter this quarter, pricing the work, and answering for it. The scan is the same either way. The readout is what they're paying you for.

## The Second Scan Is Where the Recurring Work Starts

An audit sold once is a project. An audit run twice is the start of a service. After the fixes ship, scan the site again and put the two reports side by side. The client sees the score move, and you've earned the right to raise the question the audit can't answer, which is whether the assistants have started naming them.

That question has its own measurement problem. In the same SEOFOMO survey, 35% of search professionals said they can't say what AI search contributes to revenue at all. Revenue is the hard part to pin down. Whether the assistants name a client is the part you can measure today, and an agency that reports on it every month has a standing reason to be in the room. Lighthouse Local's [AI visibility tracker](https://www.lighthouselocal.ai/how-it-works) puts a client's real customer questions to each assistant every week and logs which businesses get named. You can put that in front of clients under your own brand, since [white-label AI visibility tracking](https://www.lighthouselocal.ai/blog/white-label-ai-visibility-tracking-for-agencies) runs on your domain with your logo. If a client asks how it stacks up against trackers they've seen, our [side-by-side comparisons of AI visibility tools](https://www.lighthouselocal.ai/compare) answer that vendor by vendor.

So the path is short. A paid audit proves there's something to fix, the fixes prove you can do the work, and tracking shows whether it mattered. [Lighthouse Local for Agencies](https://www.lighthouselocal.ai/for-agencies) covers the tracking and the white-label client reporting, with a 14-day free trial to test it on a client you already have. Charge for the diagnosis once, and let the second scan make the case for the month after.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much should an agency charge for an AI visibility audit?

Set a floor from your own cost and a ceiling from the market. A 2026 review of 20 GEO agencies put one-time audits at $1,500 to $5,000, mostly for mid-market B2B clients. For a local business, five hours of work at a loaded cost of $80 an hour, marked up two to three times, comes to $800 to $1,200.

### What is the margin on reselling AI visibility audits?

The scan adds little cost per client, so nearly all of your cost is the time your team spends on the readout. A 2026 white-label benchmark found agencies resell monthly SEO work at two to three times the wholesale rate and keep gross margins of 45% to 65%. Use that as a sanity check, and price the audit against your own hours.

### Should an AI visibility audit be free or paid?

Both, for different people. Give the scan away to cold prospects, where it works as a lead magnet. Charge existing clients for the readout, because what they're buying is your judgment on their site, not the software.

### What does an AI visibility audit report include?

An overall score out of 100, six category scores covering AI Visibility, SEO, Performance, Content, Technical, and Trust and Authority, and a list of on-site findings ranked by impact. A resold audit adds your scope, a fixed quote for each group of fixes, and a baseline date for a second scan.

### Will fixing the audit findings get a client named by ChatGPT?

Not on its own, and no one can promise it. The audit reads the client's website, not the answers assistants give. The fixes make the site easier to crawl and its facts harder to misread. Whether the client gets named by ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI is something you track separately, over time.

### Can I put my agency's brand on an AI visibility audit?

Yes. A white-label audit carries your logo, colors, and domain on the scan, the results, and the emails, so the client sees your agency throughout. Beacon is Lighthouse Local's white-label audit, and it runs on a custom domain or subdomain you control.

### How do I turn a one-time audit into recurring revenue?

Scan again after the fixes ship and show the two reports together. Then move the conversation to the question the audit can't answer, whether AI assistants are naming the client, and offer monthly tracking and reporting on that.
