## Why Half the Web Is Too Slow

Here's a number that reframes the whole problem. The [Web Almanac](https://almanac.httparchive.org/en/2025/performance) found, in its report published in 2026, that only about half of all websites pass Google's speed test, 48 percent of them on mobile, measured on real visitors. So if your site feels slow, you're in good company, and the reasons are surprisingly consistent from one site to the next.

That same data points at one culprit above the rest. It's not fancy code or clever interactivity, it's loading, and loading is mostly weight. The single heaviest thing on a typical page is almost always the images. So the fastest path to a quicker site isn't a rebuild, it's working down a short list in order, heaviest first.

## Fix Your Images First

If you do one thing, do this. On a typical page the images outweigh everything else combined, more than the code, the fonts, and the rest put together. Shrink them and the whole page gets lighter in a hurry.

Three moves cover most of it. First, save your photos in a modern format like WebP or AVIF, which pack the same picture into a fraction of the file size of an old JPEG or PNG. Second, stop serving giant images the browser has to shrink on the fly, export them at the size they actually display, since a 3000-pixel photo in a 600-pixel slot is pure wasted weight. Third, compress them, because most photos shed nothing a visitor can notice at a smaller file size.

Then two rules about loading, and the order matters. Add lazy loading to every image below the fold so it waits until someone scrolls near it. But never lazy-load your biggest above-the-fold image, the one a visitor sees first, [Google's own guidance](https://web.dev/articles/optimize-lcp) is blunt that doing so always slows the page down. Mark that hero image as high priority instead, so the browser reaches for it first.

## Tame the JavaScript and Third-Party Scripts

After images, the next weight is code, and the worst of it usually isn't yours. It's the third-party scripts you bolted on and forgot, the chat widget, the analytics tags, the social feed, the review popup. Each one drags in its own pile of JavaScript, and JavaScript is the thing that makes a page feel sluggish the moment someone taps or scrolls.

Start by pruning. List every third-party tool loading on your site, then cut the ones you don't really use. For the ones you keep, load them late instead of up front, a chat widget doesn't need to arrive before your content does. Defer anything that isn't needed for the first view, and load heavy embeds like maps and videos only when a visitor actually scrolls to them.

The payoff is responsiveness. Fewer scripts, loaded later, is most of the battle.

## Speed Up Delivery and Stop the Jumps

Two smaller levers round it out, and both are quick. The first is delivery. Put your site behind a content delivery network, a CDN, which keeps copies of your pages on servers near your visitors so they arrive faster no matter where someone opens them. Most hosts and site builders offer one with a single switch, and it's among the cleanest wins for the effort. Cache your pages while you're at it, so a repeat visitor loads a saved copy instead of building it from scratch.

The second is stability, the page not lurching around as it loads. You've felt the other side of it, you go to tap a button and an image pops in above it and shoves it down. The fix is simple, give every image and embed a set width and height, or a reserved aspect ratio, so the browser holds the space before the file lands. While you're in there, self-host your main font and let text show in a fallback until it arrives, so words never sit invisible waiting on a download.
